Printemps : pourquoi vous êtes épuisé(e) alors que tout refleurit ?

Spring: why are you exhausted when everything is blooming?

In spring, you feel exhausted while everything around you is blooming again. This is normal and there's an explanation for it. We'll tell you what's really going on in your brain during the change of season.

The days are getting longer, the sun is returning, nature is reawakening. And you? You're yawning over your morning coffee, lacking drive, dragging your feet.

It's frustrating. And yet, it's perfectly normal.

What you're experiencing is called spring fatigue. It's not in your head, nor a matter of motivation: something very real is happening in your brain.

What really happens in your brain when the season changes

Your brain functions like a very precise biological clock, constantly synchronized by light.

A winter balance to recalibrate

In winter, shorter days lead the brain to produce more melatonin, the sleep hormone, earlier in the day. Your body then finds a winter balance.

When spring arrives, the days lengthen rapidly. Your body must then recalibrate its entire internal organization. This adaptation process takes time and expends energy.

A gradual neurochemical transition

In parallel, serotonin, often associated with emotional balance and well-being, increases with the return of light. But this shift doesn't happen overnight: during this period, your brain is literally reorganizing itself.

Winter reserves: often at their lowest

This hormonal recalibration is not the only cause. After several months of winter, reserves of vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients are often at their lowest level of the year.

Nutrients essential for the nervous system

B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc contribute to the proper functioning of the nervous system and cellular energy production.

In winter, the diet is often less varied, and sun exposure is almost non-existent. The result: in spring, the body starts with low reserves, precisely when it should have the most resources to adapt.

Why this accentuates fatigue

When biological resources are limited, the brain and body have more difficulty supporting the seasonal transition. The sensation of spring exhaustion then becomes more pronounced.

And what about cognitive fatigue?

There's also an often-overlooked dimension: the fatigue of a working brain.

When the prefrontal cortex saturates

During sustained attentional work, certain neurotransmitters accumulate in the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for concentration and decision-making.

In cases of saturation, this accumulation disrupts the proper functioning of this area. In short: your brain becomes chemically fatigued when it works too much without sufficient recovery.

Why spring amplifies this phenomenon

The change of season accentuates this fatigue, because your nervous system is already mobilized to adapt to a new biological rhythm.

What you can concretely do

The good news: this adaptation period is temporary. And there are concrete levers to help your body get through it without burning out.

Three essential levers
  • Morning light: exposing yourself to natural light upon waking helps resynchronize the biological clock.
  • Diet: vary your plate to provide tryptophan, magnesium, and B vitamins.
  • Recovery: avoid adding too much pressure to a nervous system already adapting.
Adaptogenic support

Certain plants can also support this period. Rhodiola and Eleuthero are known to help the body better cope with intense periods and maintain good mental clarity under pressure.

Cordyceps, for its part, supports physical and mental endurance over time. These targeted active ingredients are at the heart of certain formulas designed for transitional periods when the pace intensifies.

Understanding spring fatigue to better get through it

Spring fatigue is neither a disease nor an inevitability. It is a period of biological adaptation, well-documented, that responds to precise mechanisms.

Understanding it already helps you get through it more calmly.

And to go further, start by observing: your energy level, your concentration, your sleep. What is not observed cannot be adjusted.
