You start a file, open another tab, then forget what you came to look for. When this happens repeatedly, you may end up blaming yourself for a lack of willpower. For someone living with ADHD, attention difficulties deserve a different perspective: understanding how you function and finding suitable support.
ADD or ADHD: what do these terms mean?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with or without prominent hyperactivity, is a neurodevelopmental condition. It starts in childhood and can persist into adulthood. “ADD” is often used when inattention is predominant, without very visible hyperactivity. Experiences and their intensity vary between individuals.
When attention complicates everyday life
In adults, difficulties may involve concentration, time management, forgetfulness or completing a task. Restlessness or impulsivity may also be present. Recognising yourself in a few examples is not enough to establish a diagnosis.
To describe your experience, start with a specific situation: “I lose track when several requests arrive together” gives more information than “I am never focused”. Note what happens, in what context and with what consequences.
Three organisational reference points to try
- Make instructions visible: keep a short written note instead of relying only on a spoken explanation.
- Adapt your space: if possible, find a quiet place for tasks that need attention.
- Ask for help planning: work with another person to clarify the order of steps and the next action.
Try one adjustment at a time. The aim is to identify what actually helps you, without turning your day into a new list of obligations.
When should you seek professional advice?
If difficulties have a lasting effect on work, studies or relationships, speak with a doctor. A specialist assessment examines the history of symptoms and their impact across several areas of life. An article or well-being quiz cannot replace this assessment.
Food supplements are not a treatment for ADHD. Any supplement choices should take your situation and medication into account, with a healthcare professional.
